The current primary health care service provided in the Diamantina Shire resulted from an innovative move by Council which involved funding from three levels of government.  The contracted service provider, North & West Queensland Primary Health Care, provides three full time nursing staff in the two towns.  The current Birdsville Clinic was constructed by Council to provide a quality facility from which to deliver a primary health care service, and became operational in May 2005.  Situated right next door is the previous clinic building, owned by Frontier Services, who provided an invaluable service to the community for over 80 years.  The health worker for the shire is based at Bedourie Clinic, and each town operates a fully equipped ambulance.
