Family Services Family Services

Programs run through this service are directed to families with children 0 – 8 years of age, most particularly those children in the early childhood years.  The activities offered aim to provide support to parents raising children in isolation, and facilitate the social interaction of both parents and children with others at similar stages and ages.

Both Bedourie and Birdsville have well equipped playgroups, which are available to accompanied children in the early childhood years. These groups meet several times a week in the shire hall of each town.  A facilitator is employed to coordinate the program in each town.

EKindy is a comprehensive 'at home' kindergarten program for children in the year before Prep. The program is delivered by Brisbane School of Distance Education (BSDE) and comprises 15 hours of Kindergarten for 40 weeks a year (school terms only). Children accepted into the BSDE program are invited to register for locally run group sessions which are offered in conjunction with the distance education program.  A local facilitator is employed to coordinate the group sessions which are held 1 day per week at either the school or shire hall in each town.  To plan staffing and resources, registrations for children wishing to attend the local group sessions is required no later than 1 November each year, for sessions beginning the following school year.  A minimum of 2 children is required for group sessions to be held in either town.
