Situated on Billabong Boulevard, the modern centre offers advice on travelling in this remote region of Australia.  It also offers “must see” information on iconic Birdsville and the surrounding environment.

The centre offers visitors wireless internet, maps, souvenirs, library facilities, road conditions and weather reports throughout the Diamantina Shire and adjoining areas.  Travelling conditions and advice on the Simpson Desert including permits to travel and satellite phone hire for those contemplating the adventurous trip across the Desert.

The centre offers an extensive gallery with displays of past and present events in Birdsville and district and displays of periodic flooding.  Interpretive panel displays featuring Indigenous heritage, European History, natural history, geology, plants, animals, remote issues and what we all can do and an overview of the area.

The theatre offers regular screenings of “Back of Beyond” about Tom Kruse, the last mail man of the Birdsville Track.  Other interesting local features are also shown.  

Birdsville is the home of famous Birdsville Races, where the “Dust Never Settles” known as the “Melbourne Cup of the Outback”.  Held on the first Friday and Saturday of September each year, and drawing crowds of over 8,000 racegoers from across Australia and around the world.
