Early Learning & Schools
From playgroup to primary school, the Diamantina offers families a warm and supportive place for children to learn, play and thrive. Our Council programs, kindy and schools help connect families living in remote areas, providing opportunities for children to make friends, gain confidence and build strong foundations for the future.
Learning and Growing in the Diamantina
Playgroups
Both Bedourie and Birdsville have well-equipped playgroups for accompanied children in their early years. Playgroup sessions are held several times a week in each town’s shire hall, with a dedicated facilitator coordinating activities. These sessions provide valuable play, learning and social experiences for children, and a chance for parents to share ideas and support.
School Holiday Activities
Council also offers activities for children and young people during school holiday periods, depending on community demand. These programs give kids extra opportunities to come together, learn new skills and enjoy fun experiences in a safe, supportive setting.

Primary Schools
Both Bedourie and Birdsville are home to excellent Queensland State Schools, providing modern education from Prep to Year 6. With small class sizes and supportive staff, students receive strong academic, cultural and sporting opportunities in a close-knit learning environment.
Children living on outback properties access education through the School of the Air or with the support of a governess. After completing Year 6, many students continue their education at boarding schools in Townsville, Longreach, Charters Towers, Toowoomba, Warwick, Brisbane or Adelaide.
Kindergarten
Both Bedourie State School and Birdsville State School are part of Queensland’s Kindergarten pilot program, offering kindy on a five-day fortnight basis. This program gives children the best start to school by supporting early learning, social development and confidence in a familiar, community-based environment.
