Early Learning & Schools
From playgroup to primary school, the Diamantina offers families a warm and supportive place for children to learn, play and thrive.
Our Council programs, kindy and schools, help connect families living in remote areas, providing opportunities for children to make friends, gain confidence and build strong foundations for the future.
Learning and Growing in the Diamantina
Diamantina Shire Council supports families with young children through a range of play-based early years programs delivered in Birdsville and Bedourie. Our playgroups provide safe, welcoming spaces for accompanied children to play, learn and connect, while parents and carers can share ideas and build local support networks.
All playgroups are facilitated by a dedicated coordinator and are affiliated with Play Matters.
First Five Forever Programs
First Five Forever is a Queensland Government initiative that supports families to talk, read, sing and play with their babies and young children from birth to five years, helping build strong foundations for lifelong learning.

Primary Schools
Both Bedourie and Birdsville are home to excellent Queensland state schools, providing contemporary education from Kindergarten to Year 6. With small class sizes and supportive staff, students benefit from strong academic, social, cultural and sporting opportunities within a close-knit learning environment.
Kindergarten is offered on a five-day fortnight basis and is guided by the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines and the K–12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework. This program gives children the best possible start to school by supporting early learning, transition, social development and confidence in a familiar, community-based environment.
Children living on outback properties may access education through Schools of Distance Education (formerly known as School of the Air) with the support of a parent, governess or nanny. After completing Year 6, many students continue their education at boarding schools or through homestay arrangements as day students in Townsville, Longreach, Charters Towers, Toowoomba, Warwick, Brisbane or Adelaide. Families also have the option of continuing their child’s education through Schools of Distance Education up to Year 12, if boarding or homestay is not the right fit for their child.
