Dust to Decibels: Opera Queensland Strikes High Note at Betoota Races
Published on 03 September 2025
Opera Queensland’s ‘All Together Now’ captivated a crowd of 500 at the Betoota Races, transforming an outback racing tradition into an unforgettable cultural event.
The day kicked off with S.T.Ruth and her sister B-Ute, who delivered the perfect dose of outback comedy and cheek to set the tone for the weekend. Opera Queensland’s 2025 regional tour wowed punters with a feel-good performance blending opera classics with pop hits, folk favourites, and iconic Aussie anthems. In true Betoota spirit, even those who left the track without a win departed with a song in their step.
A new partnership between Diamantina Shire Council and Opera Queensland enabled the first-ever opera performance in the Diamantina, marking a historic milestone for the Channel Country. Diamantina Shire Mayor Francis Murray emphasised Council’s ongoing commitment to fostering community connection and enhancing cultural opportunities in the bush.
“Betoota is known for horses, dust and mateship, but this year it was filled the magic of opera under the vast outback sky. I am proud that we could bring a world-class arts experience to the Diamantina’s smallest town,” said Mayor Murray.
The Betoota Races have once again reinforced their reputation as a highlight of the outback calendar, blending tradition with new experiences.
The event also set the stage for the Simpson Desert Racing Carnival, where all roads now lead to the iconic Birdsville Races this weekend.
Betoota Rodeo and Races is held annually on the last weekend in August.
