Tourism & Hospitality Officer

Council is seeking enthusiastic personnel to join our experienced staff at the Wirrarri Visitor Information Centre in Birdsville. The Wirrarri Centre is the focal point for locals and tourists and hosts the Library and Gallery full of history and local artefacts.

You will need to be organised, have great customer service and possess excellent computer skills. Previous experience in a similar role would be highly regarded. This is an excellent opportunity for you to develop your knowledge and experience within the tourist sector at an iconic destination.

Please note that this position will involve a Monday to Sunday 7-day work roster during peak tourist periods.

This is a Maximum Term Fulltime (till 31 Dec 2022) position with a competitive remuneration package ($58,174 to $61,997 depending on your experience, allowances), which includes above award wages.

You will be entitled to six weeks' annual leave and a comfortable home will be available for rent in Birdsville at subsidised rental.

Accommodation Duty Manager

Applications are invited from suitably experienced candidates for the position of Accommodation Duty Manager. We are seeking a highly experienced and qualified person to assist the manager in operations of the Birdsville Tourist Park (incorporating budget rooms, standard cabins, deluxe cabins, and powered and unpowered sites) and Birdsville Lodge (a 49 ensuited room Lodge).

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•             Reception/reservations, including group bookings

•             Maintenance

•             Grounds keeping, gardens and aesthetic appeal

•             Cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning!

To be successful in this role:

•             you will have a background in tourism and hospitality, with management experience of a regional/remote Tourist Park facility; and

•             you are motivated, positive and willing to serve the many travellers who frequent Birdsville; and

•             you are adaptable and flexible

This position is based in Birdsville which is a small but vital town with fantastic modern facilities including 24/7 health services, school, sporting facilities and twice weekly flights to/from Brisbane and Mount Isa.

A competitive remuneration package is offered ($63,540 to $90,935 depending on allowances and bonuses), including above award wages and 6 weeks’ annual leave. A comfortable home is available in Birdsville at subsidised rent.

Diesel Mechanic

Applications are invited from experienced Diesel Mechanic to provide an effective and efficient mechanical service involving the repair, servicing and maintenance of Council’s plant, equipment and vehicle fleet.  Plant includes Heavy Commercials, Earthmoving, Agricultural Type equipment, light fleet and ancillary items. We Require you to have…

•           Trade Qualified Diesel Mechanic Certificate.

•           To hold current HR drivers licence or able to obtain.

•           A minimum of 3 years’ trade experience.

•           Be physically fit for hot/dry conditions.

•           To hold Working Safely in the Construction Industry CPCCOH1001A (white card).

•           Experience with CAT equipment preferred.

Plant Operator (Grader Final Trim)

We are looking for an experienced hands-on applicant with excellent driving skills and a positive attitude. If you have the ability to final trim all types of road construction including DTMR projects, carry out basic operating checks and daily maintenance this could be the opportunity to bring your skills to a dynamic shire and community.

We Require you have…

  • Certificate of Competency in Grader Operations
  • Current Construction Safety Induction Card (White Card)
  • Knowledge of Main Roads Standard and Techniques; and
  • Current Queensland 'C" Class Licence ("MC" Class Licence Desirable)


This position will be based in either Bedourie or Birdsville which are small but vital towns with fantastic modern facilities including 24/7 health services, schools, sporting facilities and twice weekly flights to/from Brisbane/Mt Isa.

A competitive remuneration package is offered ($71,702 to $111,323 depending on allowances and overtime), including above award wages and 6 weeks’ annual leave. A comfortable home is available in Bedourie or Birdsville at subsidised rent.

Road Construction Foreman

We are seeking a new Road Construction Foreman to join our busy team. As a Road Construction Foreman, you will be responsible to the construction and maintenance of roads. You will need the ability to analyse and diagnose road maintenance issues in an efficient and timely manner and interpret engineering and road plans whilst leading a team.  

The position will be based in either Bedourie or Birdsville which are small but vital towns with fantastic modern facilities including 24/7 health service, school, sporting facilities and twice weekly flights to/from Brisbane/Mt Isa. A comfortable home will be available at subsidised rental.

This is a fulltime permanent position with a competitive remuneration package ($76,808 to $117,977 depending on your experience, allowances and overtime), and restricted private use of a Council vehicle. Council also provides 6 weeks’ annual leave with 17.5% leave loading and 9.5% superannuation.

The hours of work will be the same as the works crews, currently operating on a 10/4 roster during which a reasonable amount of overtime is worked whilst they reside in their modern mobile camp accommodation.
