Waste

Managing waste responsibly helps keep the Diamantina Shire clean, safe and sustainable. Council provides facilities and services to support the proper disposal of household, commercial and regulated waste.

Waste is part of everyday life and can be grouped into several categories based on its source and how it is collected or managed:

  • Domestic or Municipal Waste includes household waste collected through Council’s weekly kerbside service, waste delivered by residents to landfill (tip) sites, and rubbish collected from public litter bins and community clean-up days.
  • Commercial Waste includes non-hazardous solid waste generated by businesses such as shops, offices, restaurants, and hospitals.
  • Regulated Waste includes waste materials that require special handling and disposal. This may include treated medical waste, asbestos, contaminated soil, oils, rubber tyres, batteries, or other hazardous waste. Regulated waste should not be placed in household bins or taken to local tips without prior approval.

Garbage collection days for Bedourie and Birdsville is Tuesday.

Your household waste bin must be placed on the kerbside before 6.00am on collection day.
Please ensure your bin:

  • Is positioned with the lid opening facing the street and the wheels facing your property.

  • Is not obstructed by parked vehicles, trees, or other objects.

Waste Facilities and Dump Points

Council operates landfill (tip) sites in Birdsville and Bedourie, and blackwater dump points for campervan and motorhome toilet cassettes.

Birdsville Tip and Dump Points

The Birdsville rubbish tip is located along the road between Birdsville and Big Red - Birdsville Simpson Desert National Park Road.

Blackwater dump points:

  • On the left side of the road from Birdsville to Big Red — just before the tip turn-off.

  • On the road east to the Birdsville Race Track — left side of the road, after the Diamantina River.

Bedourie Tip and Dump Point

The Bedourie rubbish tip is located north of Bedourie along the road to Boulia - Diamantina Developmental Road.

Blackwater dump point:

  • Just north of Bedourie on the right side of the road to Boulia.

Please follow on-site signage for dumping guidelines.
