Closure of Birdsville Courthouse Due to Asbestos

As part of Council’s overall continuous improvement in workplace and public safety strategy, Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) debris has been identified that appears to have been historically disposed of on Council Land around and adjacent to the Birdsville Courthouse and also on adjacent land owned by the Queensland Government. Testing of samples collected has been positively identified as Chrysotile (White Asbestos).

To ensure public safety, Council has made the decision to immediately close off all access to the Birdsville Courthouse and grounds in addition to the land behind and adjacent. Signage and barricading / fencing has been erected to prohibit access to these areas. As such it is an offence under the Public Health Act and Regulation for any person to enter these areas unless formally approved by Council to carry out authorised inspection and / or remediation works. Council are currently arranging for a Qualified Asbestos Hygienist to visit the site to assist Council in assessing the situation and to develop a remediation plan.

Council apologises for this inconvenienc
